Life lessons from a true cattle woman
There’s a lot to be said for hard work and for working at something you love for almost a lifetime. This woman is a true cattle woman, who’s worked alongside her husband for more than 30 years. She’s fed, cared for, and gathered countless herds of cattle—cattle that have provided a good living for her family.
I first met her almost 30 years ago in north Texas. At the time, I made my living at a desk. But I always knew I wanted to do something more fulfilling. Recently, I had the privilege of photographing her for a museum assignment. On that day, I recalled the time I met her, as she talked about how much she loved her work. Looking through the camera at her, I realized that I’m also fulfilling my life’s work, away from that desk. Maybe, all those years ago, my friend sparked something in me so that I could follow my own heart.
